When the new over-the-counter Jabra Enhance Plus hearing device launched in August 2021, there was huge speculation over its quality and whether or not it would live up to the hype.

If you have purchased the Jabra Enhance Plus, then you are best placed to be the judge of that. However, if you’re reading this article, then perhaps you’ve noticed a few issues that are affecting the quality of sound.

In the following paragraphs, we’ll give you some useful tips that you can try at home to boost your devices’ performance and prolong their life.

Please note: These tips aren’t exclusive to the Jabra Enhance Plus and can be applied to most brands of hearing aids.

#1 – Regularly Clean Your Hearing Devices

Your ears are one of the busiest places in the body for the buildup of dead skin, bacteria, and debris. So, if you’ve noticed a dip in quality lately, it might be because your tiny device is clogged up with just that.

Keeping your devices clean is one of the most critical parts of performing maintenance and really shouldn’t be overlooked.

As a general rule of thumb, you should aim to spend at least 10 minutes cleaning each device every week.

Here’s how you can do this:

Be sure to use a soft, dry cloth to clean them without getting them wet, and use a wax loop to clean debris from the hearing device openings. Remember to be gentle, as you can easily damage the hearing aid by pushing the wax loop too far.

You may use a mild soap to clean the earmolds, but make sure not to use a hairdryer to blow dry them, as the force from a hairdryer is too strong for the delicate structure of the earmolds. Instead, use a forced air blower, or let them dry at room temperature.

#2 – Battery Care

Hopefully, it goes without saying that the first thing to check if your hearing devices aren’t performing properly is that the battery is fully charged and working.

The Jabra Enhance Plus offers a ten hour battery life from one charge. However, this can easily get eaten up if you wear them all day and into the night, so regular charging is necessary.

Your hearing aids can’t function without a battery, so make sure you have plenty of spare batteries with you to be safe. Batteries generally last between 1 to 2 weeks, depending on how much your usage is.

The sound quality will be the best when the battery is full, and we recommend that you get a battery tester to check the battery correctly.

When changing the battery, you can prevent your hearing aids from shock by changing the battery over a towel placed on a table or over a bed, just in case you accidentally drop them.

Also, make sure you keep your spare and used batteries in a safe place, as they contain toxic chemicals that may be dangerous once swallowed (and, of course, keep them out of reach of children).

If you have rechargeable hearing devices, it is important to have the audiologist check your charger from time to time.  The power cords should be checked to make sure there are no crimps or breaks in them.

The interior of the charger should be cleaned to make sure the contact is free from any debris that may keep your devices from charging efficiently.

You can simply bring your hearing device charger to one of your regular appointments for your hearing care practitioner to check it out for you.

#3 – Ensure The Domes (Or EarGels) Are Fit Correctly

The Jabra Enhance Plus uses typical instant fit domes (or EarGels as they call them) to help seal the ear canal and anchor the devices in place.

A poorly fit dome can lead to issues such as a “migration” where the device can work its way outside of the ear and reduce the amount of amplification that you’re receiving, not to mention lead to problems with feedback or a potential “whistling” sound.

If you think this could be an issue, then simply adjust the dome and see if it makes a difference.

OK, So You’ve Tried All Of The Above And There’s Still A Problem…What Next?

If the issue isn’t that your devices are dirty, or the battery is flat, or even that the dome is in the wrong place, then you may need to consider that the device isn’t quite working for you. Period.

The Jabra Enhance Plus is what we call an “over-the-counter” product, which means it can be bought by anyone who has self-diagnosed themselves with a hearing challenge.

You don’t need to have had a hearing test or visited an audiologist/hearing care specialist and therein could lie the problem, as the hearing device you’ve purchased may not be suitable for the level of hearing loss you have.

Put simply, there’s a strong possibility your hearing device isn’t faulty at all – it’s just not right for you.

If this feels right for your situation, don’t worry, you’re not alone.

Many people have been caught out by buying OTC devices that aren’t right for them through absolutely no fault of their own.

In fact, we’ve seen it happen that often that we decided to do something about it…

Here’s how it works:

If you:

  • Are not receiving the performance that you hoped for from the devices that you’ve purchased
  • Have been wearing them for at least 30 days

And you’re now ready to restart your journey to better hearing alongside a trusted team of audiologists, then this program is right for you.

We’ll be able to value your existing over-the-counter devices, often supplying you with a very generous quote.
