Expanding Your Hearing with Cochlear Implants
Hearing loss, unfortunately, is a very common and isolating condition that affects people in different ways. It can be extremely frustrating for the individual involved, especially if they find they can’t do the same things they used to anymore.
Many people are quick to discard hearing aids, fearing they have accepted old age, when in fact it is doing the opposite by providing you with the tool to reengage with your life once more.
With technological advancements and scientific research over the years, specialists have identified the main concerns of hearing loss, which is clarity.
This research fuelled the concept behind a cochlear implant, which converts muffled sound into clearer hearing, allowing the individual to translate conversation better.
What are Cochlear Implants?
Essentially, a cochlear implant is an electronic device that is implanted into the cochlear, the snail-shaped part of the inner ear.
It is designed to compensate for the damaged structures of the inner ear, restoring access to sound for the wearer.
Its success at converting sound has sustained itself in both children and adults while also being used on small children as young as six months.

An Implant Contains The Following Parts:
- A speech processor, which helps with clarity
- A microphone, which picks up sound from your environment
- A transmitter and receiver/stimulator, which receives signals from the speech processor and converts them into electric impulses
- An electrode array, which is a group of electrodes that collects impulses from the stimulator and sends them to different regions of the auditory nerve
All of these parts work together to give someone with a hearing loss a useful representation of sounds in the environment, helping them to understand speech.
House of Hearing is happy to demonstrate how a cochlear implant works and talk through the benefits you will expect to see.
